The Texas Department of Public Safety (TDOT) allows driver’s ed to be completed outside of the classroom if the course is part of the approved parent-taught driver education program. This program, also known as PTDE, helps students and parents connect on the important topics of driving safety and ensures qualified adult guidance during driving hours.
How it Works: Each student and parent is required to request approval to complete the parent-taught driver education by completing a TDLR application. Once you have been approved, the TDLR will send you a parent taught driver’s ed packet filled with information and forms. Once your TDLR packet has been received, you will be able to begin the online course material necessary to apply for your first Texas learner’s license and driver’s license.
Adult Six Hour Course (18-24 years)
The State of Texas requires that people 18-24 years of age must take a six-hour driver’s ed course before going to DPS for their driver’s license.
This class will provide you with the paperwork for your permit. With this you will be able to set up a road test at the DPS, which you must pass in order to receive your driver’s license.
Adult Private Lessons

Parent-Taught Driver Education (PTDE) is a State of Texas-approved option that allows a parent or legal guardian to teach the classroom and or driving portion at home.
-
How PTDE Works
-
Parent and student must apply through TDLR for approval
-
Once approved, TDLR sends a PTDE packet with all required forms and instructions
-
After receiving the packet, the student may begin the online coursework
-
The parent is responsible for teaching driving hours and completing all documentation exactly as outlined
-
Important Notes for Families
-
The PTDE packet must be received before starting any online course
-
Only eligible parents or guardians may teach under PTDE (TDLR lists disqualifying factors)
-
PTDE is optional; families may choose PTDE or a commercial driving school like One Way
-
-
Texas requires a 6-hour adult driver education course for first-time adult drivers.
-

-
Obtain a learner permit
-
Schedule a DPS road test
-
Or test with One Way Driving School (must already have a learner permit to test with us)
